What’s Fluoxetine?

Fluoxetine hydrochloride is an antidepressant of the selective serum reabsorption inhibitor (SSRI) type; its drug is formed as Fluoxetine hydrochloride and is marketed as "Prozac" or "Prozac". Developed by Eli Lilly and marketed in the 1990s, it is used to treat adult depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. It has good antidepressant effect and is widely used as a first-line antidepressant drug in clinic. The main pharmacological action is to selectively inhibit the reuptake of serotonin released presynaptic in the central nervous system, also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibito. Fluoxetine has little binding effect on other receptors, such as alpha-adrenergic, beta-adrenergic, serotonergic, and dopaminergic. Fluoxetine was well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration and the plasma concentration peaked at about 6-8 h. About 95% bind to plasma proteins and are widely distributed. A steady-state plasma concentration is achieved after several weeks of medication. It is metabolized by the liver and produces the active metabolite demethylfluoxetine through demethylation. The elimination half-life of fluoxetine is 4-6 days and that of norfluoxetine is 4-16 days. It is mainly excreted through the kidneys. Since it can be secreted to breast milk, it is recommended to prescribe caution to pregnant and lactating women.
